LLMs function as something like conceptual probes, forcing us to make explicit distinctions that human language allowed us to leave implicit. They separate competence from experience, fluency from understanding, linguistic behavior from intentionality. And in doing so, they force us to reconsider not just what these systems are, but what language, meaning, and intelligence have been all along.
